LOS ANGELES, CA -- Picking up where they left off in 1998, the Libertarian Party of California
has officially endorsed petitions submitted by State Senator Tom McClintock (R-Northridge) that
would either reduce or completely phase out the state's punishing car tax -- formally known as the
Vehicle License Fee -- in response to Gray Davis's tripling the tax by decree.
In 1998 the Libertarian Party of California officially endorsed AB1776, a bill proposed by then
Assemblyman Tom McClintock that would have completely abolished the Car Tax. Now Senator
McClintock has submitted to the Secretary of State a statutory initiative measure that would reduce
the Vehicle License Fee to a token $1 per year, as well as a Constitutional Amendment initiative
measure that would completely abolish the Vehicle License Fee. State Libertarians quickly added
formal backing of the initiatives with a motion, presented by their Executive Committee, depicting the
tripling of the tax as unconscionable and counterproductive, and criticizing the arguably illegal manner
in which it was increased.
The Libertarian Party's motion (which passed without dissent) ended up coming to three resolutions.
First they enthusiastically endorsed Senator McClintock's efforts to roll back the despised Car Tax.
Then the Party gave the green light to its members to circulate and sign petitions to place such an
initiative on the ballot. They further resolved to urge all Californians to express their determination to
rid themselves of the Vehicle License Fee and reject the latest arrogant act of Davis overwhelmingly
when the opportunity presents itself on the ballot.
The passage of either initiative would provide enormous financial relief to the California economy
and to overburdened car owners, and would send notice to Sacramento that the Davis
Administration, which instituted the tax hike without a vote in the legislature, will not balance the
budget on the backs of taxpayers. That message goes for any future administration as well, no matter
how soon in the future that might be. While circulating the anti-tax petitions, signature-gatherers may
also want to keep a few copies of the petition to recall Governor Davis handy, just in case.
