Libertarians to gather in San Jose
for state convention this weekend
SAN JOSE -- Libertarians from all over California will descend
upon San Jose this weekend to debate the state party platform and
bylaws, elect new state officers, and listen to an impressive roster
of speakers and Libertarian luminaries at the state party’s annual
convention, to be held at the Doubletree Hotel San Jose starting
Friday, February 16, and running through Monday, February 19.
"This is the biggest event of the year for California
Libertarians," declared outgoing state chair Mark Hinkle. "We are
looking forward to gathering in San Jose and promoting the Libertarian
principles of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited
government. It should be quite a weekend!"
The convention kicks off with meetings of the state Platform and
Bylaws Committees on Friday afternoon. Those committees will debate
and propose changes to the party's state platform and bylaws. A
Welcoming Reception will be held for delegates and attendees Friday
night.
Saturday begins with a Breakfast featuring Libertarian Irv Rubin
of the Jewish Defense League. Saturday afternoon's roster of speakers
includes 1972 Libertarian presidential candidate John Hospers and
Libertarian National Treasurer Mark Tuniewicz. Mary Ruwart, author of
"Healing our World," will be the featured speaker at the annual Gala
Banquet on Saturday night.
Sunday's lineup includes Libertarian National Chairman Jim Lark,
writer Tibor Machan, and Dr. Gordon LaBedz, who helped found the
Surfrider Foundation.
The convention concludes Monday with the 20th Annual Samuel Adams
Society Awards Luncheon. Guest speaker at that luncheon will be
"Ballot Access News" editor Richard Winger.
Throughout the weekend, delegates chosen by local party affiliates
will conduct party business during General Sessions. On Sunday
delegates will elect a new slate of state officers. Current chair
Mark Hinkle of Morgan Hill has served as chair since 1997 and is not
seeking re-election.
