Libertarians announce slate of 295 candidates
on November ballot
PANORAMA CITY -- A record 295 Libertarian candidates will
appear on the November ballot this year -- far more than ever
for the Libertarian Party of California and clearly more
candidates than any other third party -- running for
everything from U.S. Senate to sanitary district, the party
announced today.
"We are fulfilling our obligation as a political party by
running as many candidates as possible," declared Libertarian
state chair Mark Hinkle. "This is yet another sign that the
Libertarian Party is the strongest third party in California.
Our candidates will demonstrate that Libertarian ideas
resonate with voters, and we fully expect Libertarian
victories on November 7."
113 partisan and 182 non-partisan Libertarian candidates
have qualified for the general election ballot. If candidates
who ran in the March primary are included, the party will have
fielded 304 candidates for the year -- shattering the party's
1998 slate of 106 candidates by 187%. By comparison, the Green
and Reform Parties are running only nine and 12 partisan
candidates this year, respectively.
Last summer California Libertarians announced a 200-candidate
goal for the year 2000, a figure the party has surpassed by 52%.
"Thanks to the hard work and dedication of dozens of
Libertarian activists, we were able to recruit more candidates
for non-partisan office than ever before," Hinkle noted. "Our
candidates will discuss the issues voters care about and will
work to implement innovative Libertarian solutions at all
levels of government."
The Libertarian slate includes: seven candidates for City
Council seats, 23 school board candidates, 29 hospital and
health care district candidates, and 79 water and irrigation
district candidates. Libertarians are also seeking positions
on fire protection districts, recreation and park districts,
community services districts, and transportation districts.
Twenty-four races include the Libertarian candidate facing
off against a single challenger in a two-way contest, while an
additional 17 races would not have made it on the ballot if the
Libertarian had not entered the race.
A complete list of candidates is available on the state
party's web site, www.ca.lp.org.
